Several signs point to soil that’s too compacted and a lawn that’s due for aeration.
Standing water after rain
If water hasn’t soaked in within 30 minutes of a rainfall, your soil is likely too compacted to drain normally.
Hard soil that’s difficult to pierce
Try the pencil test. If a pencil doesn’t push easily 2 inches (5 cm) into the soil, your lawn needs aeration.
