How to keep skunks away from grubs?
Did you wake up one morning and your lawn looked like a battlefield covered in tiny holes? Chances are, the presence of grubs underneath it has attracted skunks or raccoons. These large white “C”-shaped larvae are part of the diet of these devastating little animals.
What can you do about grubs?
These worms are the larvae of beetles and chafer beetles, which feed on grass roots to survive. In large quantities, they weaken the turf and can cause patches of yellowed or dead grass to appear on the lawn. Since these patches no longer have roots, they are easily removed and the worms can be seen underneath. cVert technicians are able to perform a grub treatment to eradicate this pest from your lawn.
How can you prevent a grub infestation?
To prevent an infestation of these worms, we recommend enriching your lawn, as needed, through the moderate use of fertilizers and watering. Remember, a healthy lawn is more resistant to larvae. Also, make sure your yard is not lit in the evening, as adult insects will be attracted by the light. When you mow your lawn, set the height at 3″. A lawn that’s too short will encourage females to come and lay their eggs. Finally, when July and August arrive, stop watering. This will prevent budding larvae from using soil moisture to grow, and they will die.
Insecticide treatments against grubs are available for lawns. Several countries and municipalities have banned these products. However, if they are permitted in your area, you should be aware that their extreme toxicity is lethal to bees and birds. As a result, they are also highly toxic to your children and pets for some time.

What can you do about skunks?
If skunks or raccoons persist in ploughing up your lawn, the use of animal repellents may prove effective. Many of these products are based on different chili peppers and will thwart the animals’ sense of smell, preventing them from finding food under your lawn. These products should be used on a regular basis, especially after it rains, and after any patches of grass torn up by animals have been put back into place. In the same vein, you can concoct your own homemade solution using pepper and chillies.
Can I use mothballs to keep skunks away?
Note that the widespread use of mothballs is to be avoided at all costs. They contain a pesticide designed to eliminate the common clothes moth, which attacks natural fibers such as wool. These white balls are highly toxic and should never be dispersed outdoors.
Note that the best way to eradicate your problem is toget rid of the grubs, since they are at the root of the problem.
