How do you get rid of horsetail in your garden for good?
Horsetail’s deep, tough roots make it particularly difficult to eradicate. But don’t give up hope: it can be done.
Horsetail, or Equisetum arvense in Latin, or rather a type of “weed” in popular jargon, is a perennial herbaceous plant. It always grows on damp ground, where the sheltered water table may be shallow or very deep. The power of its roots and tubers enables it to regenerate almost incessantly, making it difficult to eradicate.

How to kill horsetail and get rid of it?
On lawns, very short and assiduous mowing can gradually weaken it over time, or at least reduce its presence.
At the same time, if your lawn has bare patches and you want to sow them, aerating the lawn andenriching the soil with a deepfertilizer will help the new seeds to grow.
What you need to know is that horsetail needs sunlight to survive. So depriving it of light by covering it with mulch or an opaque cloth is an effective way of getting rid of horsetail. The cover should remain in place for around 24 months, as one year is not long enough to kill the plant completely. Of course, covering your entire yard with mulch may not be the most aesthetically pleasing solution. That’s why this technique is suggested foreradicating horsetail in your flowerbeds, areas where you have flowers, and so on.
For other areas, you can simply cut the horsetail at its base on a regular basis, i.e. at least 5-6 times in the first year and a few more times in the second. This will prevent it from obtaining the light it needs to survive, and will gradually weaken it until it dies out.
To gradually weaken it without too much effort, you can plant taller plants that will shade out the horsetail. To control horsetail in this way, you’ll need two or three years.
