How do I water my lawn properly?
A lawn that lacks water stops growing. The leaves and stems die and turn brown, but the underground parts remain alive until rainy weather returns. In general, a well-tended lawn survives summer droughts fairly well without the need for irrigation.
Why water your lawn?
Watering keeps your lawn growing and healthy.
When should I water my lawn?
Water your lawn in the morning, before sunrise, so that it dries quickly. Watering in the evening increases the risk of disease and fungus because the lawn remains wet for several hours. To detect water shortages, you’ll notice that footprints persist, grass color darkens and blades fold inward.

How much water should I use for watering?
Lawns should get 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall.
How do you know if you’ve watered enough?
The roots should be moist within 3 inches of the soil. Water for about an hour and a half to two hours in the same spot, otherwise the water stays in the thatch. It takes an hour for the water to get past the thatch. You can water once a week, but water well. To help, you can put a bowl on the ground and if there’s been an inch of water in the week, that’s enough without rain.
